Two Ways to Experience Alaska
Holland America offers a simple roundtrip Vancouver itinerary and strong verandah pricing. Viking offers a quieter 930-guest ship and three additional nights in Alaska.
Both cruises offer a comfortable first Alaska experience. The main decision comes down to simpler travel and lower pricing on Koningsdam or a smaller ship and longer itinerary on Viking Venus.
Two Different Styles of Alaska Cruising
Holland America Koningsdam
Guests fly into Vancouver, board in Vancouver and return to the same city after the cruise. The week includes three port days and three scenic or sea days. Tracy Arm is scenic cruising before the afternoon and evening call in Juneau, not a separate port day.
Koningsdam offers several dining venues, live music and more evening choices than Viking.
The quoted verandah cabin is midship on Deck 8 in room 8139, with convenient access to the upper-deck dining and observation areas.

The maps make the difference in pace easy to see. Holland America returns to Vancouver after three port days. Viking travels one way from Seward to Vancouver and adds more Alaska ports.
Koningsdam
Three port days in Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan. The route also includes two Inside Passage sailing days, Glacier Bay and brief Tracy Arm scenic cruising before Juneau.
Viking Venus
The July 19 sailing follows this route from Seward south to Vancouver, with seven guided-tour ports plus Hubbard Glacier and an Inside Passage sailing day.
Highlighted Venues on Each Ship
Koningsdam offers more scheduled evening entertainment. Viking’s evenings are quieter, with live music, lectures, films and destination-focused programming.

Pricing for the Possible Room Arrangements
The verandah choices provide private outdoor space throughout the cruise. Viking’s higher total reflects three additional nights, a 930-guest ship, more Alaska ports and one included excursion in each port. Holland America also offers Ocean View rooms for travelers who place greater priority on the cabin price.
All room prices shown below were refreshed August 5, 2026. Viking Air is optional at $999 per person.

The Main Differences at a Glance
Port Times and Viking’s Included Tours
Holland America has three port days and three scenic or sea days. Tracy Arm is a short scenic-cruising visit before Juneau on the same day. Viking has seven port days, one Hubbard Glacier scenic day and one Inside Passage sailing day. Port times can change before sailing.
Roundtrip Vancouver
Three port days: Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan. Three scenic or sea days: the Inside Passage twice and Glacier Bay. Tracy Arm occurs before Juneau on the same day. The $100 shore excursion credit is per guest for the full cruise.

Viking designates one complimentary excursion in each port. Guests reserve the included tour and an available departure time after excursion booking opens. These examples can change before the 2027 sailing.
Seward: Alaska SeaLife Center
Complimentary shuttle service takes guests to the Alaska SeaLife Center for independent exploration of its aquarium, marine research exhibits and rehabilitation work. Guests may stay as long as they like and use Viking’s shuttle to return.
Valdez: Valdez On Your Own
Use the local shuttle to explore the Valdez Museum, the Maxine & Jesse Whitney Museum or the city center. This is a flexible introduction to the fishing town, its history and mountain setting.
Icy Strait Point: Icy Strait Point On Your Own
Explore the waterfront independently, use the Skyglider gondola pass and attend a Tlingit cultural performance at the Heritage Center Native Theater.
Skagway: Historic Skagway & White Pass Summit
Travel by motor coach through historic Skagway and climb to the 3,290-foot White Pass summit while the guide shares stories of the Klondike Gold Rush and the route’s historic landmarks.
Juneau: The Mendenhall Glacier
Drive through Juneau to Mendenhall Valley, then spend time at the glacier viewpoint or explore nearby trails such as Nugget Falls, Steep Creek or the Moraine Ecology Trail.
Sitka: Scenic Sitka & Theatrical Performance
See Sitka’s main landmarks by motor coach, watch the Alaska Story Teller Dancers at Centennial Hall and finish with a short immersive film in the Alaska Odyssey Theater.
Ketchikan: Potlatch Totem Park & Ketchikan History
Visit Potlatch Totem Park, a recreation of a 19th-century Native village, learn about traditional totem carving and hear about Ketchikan’s timber heritage on the return drive.
Why the Verandah Stands Out
A private verandah gives each traveler a quiet place to watch the coastline, look for wildlife and enjoy glacier-viewing days away from the busiest open decks.
Holland America offers that private outdoor space at a substantially lower total. Viking includes it in every room.
The Holland America Ocean View rooms reduce the price but place guests on Deck 1 with a fixed window and no private outdoor space.
Alaska Experiences That Fit This Group
Guided kayaking belongs near the top of the list. Alaska weather and water conditions may affect individual tours so each option also has a strong alternative.
Juneau and Ketchikan
Look for guided paddling on Mendenhall Lake, Auke Bay or protected coastal coves near Ketchikan.
Seward, Valdez and Sitka
These ports add more chances for protected-water paddling, wildlife viewing and smaller-group coastal experiences.
Whale Watching
Juneau and Icy Strait Point offer strong whale-watching opportunities with local small-boat operators.
Glaciers and White Pass
Glacier Bay, Hubbard Glacier and the White Pass Railway provide memorable scenery without an active excursion.
Gluten and Dairy Intolerance
Both cruise lines can work with gluten and dairy intolerance when the dietary needs are documented before travel and reviewed with the onboard dining team.
Holland America
Holland America publishes the clearer advance-notice process and Koningsdam offers more dining venues. I would add both intolerances to the reservation, contact Ship Services before sailing and arrange a meeting with the Dining Room Manager after boarding.
Viking
Viking asks guests who need gluten-free meals to report the restriction at least 90 days before departure and review both intolerances with the maître d’ onboard. The smaller ship may allow more direct interaction with the dining team.
The Decision Comes Down to Two Priorities
Koningsdam offers the simpler and more affordable first-cruise option with roundtrip Vancouver travel, Glacier Bay and more onboard dining and entertainment choices.
Viking Venus offers the true small-ship experience with three additional nights, more Alaska ports and one included excursion in each port.
On either cruise, the verandah rooms provide the strongest fit for Alaska by giving each traveler private outdoor space for the scenery and wildlife.
